Chapter 15
A metallic scrape raised the hair on the backs of the Cerberus operatives' necks as if it had sent current through their bodies. As it escaped Piccard's womb the submersible had kissed the doomed ship's hull. Then they were falling free, amid rumblings and groans and startling cracks as the larger vessel surrendered to the implacable force of the ocean.
For what seemed an eternity the Deep Sea Vehicle Orpheus plunged toward the bottom of the Pacific fifteen hundred fathoms below. With his stomach trying to crowd its way past his clamped jaws, Kane got himself sorted out from Brigid and Domi. It was a demanding job; the cabin was cramped and full of protrusions and the little craft rocked like a thrill ride. All three collected scrapes and bruises.
In the dim red illumination Kane could make out an empty seat forward, beside Grant. He struggled into it. As he did, the craft settled finally onto an even keel. "Got the bitch under control," Grant said in a matter-of- fact tone. The way sweat streamed down his carven-mahogany features belied his apparent calm.
Unlike the Lemurian egg craft, the DSV had but a single narrow circular viewport forward. Grant was hunched toward it, peering into a tunnel of blue-white light driven through darkness by the submersible's spotlight. Rather than try to crane to peer through the port himself, possibly distracting the man who only held all their lives in his large, strong hands, Kane settled into the role of instrument officer, trying to read the bewildering array of readouts and general blinky lights that seemed to occupy every square inch of the vessel's interior except the deck underfoot.
It wm a role he was intimately familiar with from Deathbird days, when Grant piloted and he sat down in the dropped snout of the attack chopper watching the instruments and looking for things to shoot. And also shooting them, of course. Here and now he couldn't make sense of much of the information being conveyed. He could track what was necessary to keep them alive and headed in the right direction—he fervently hoped. Vibration enveloped them. It grew to a rumble that shook the little craft.
"What the fuck's that?" Deed asked. "A tornado?" "Sounds like a big arty shell passing overhead," Grant said, staring intently forward with his hands clamped on the yoke so hard his knuckles were pale yellow. "Mebbe a whole damn barrage."
Kane's gaze flicked around. There was just the one window to look out of. But the little beast had video cameras mounted all over its hull so that they could be remotely swiveled to view the entire sphere of space surrounding the craft. It also had multiple monitors so he could instantly look in several directions at once, including straight back. He checked their six and let out a yelp. "Holy shit! It's Piccard!"
"Doing what?" Brigid asked. "Chasing us?" "Yes!"
Lights within its launch bay still burning yellow, lighting the opening up like a maw, the sinking hulk closed in upon the tiny submersible.
